Before starting my apprenticeship, I spent a lot of time reflecting on what I wanted from my career. Like many others in my sixth form, I faced the ultimate question: university or apprenticeship?
After careful consideration, I realised that the traditional university route wasn’t the right fit for me. The idea of hands-on learning, jumping straight into the real world, and contributing to exciting projects while still earning a degree felt far more aligned with my ambitions.
A pivotal moment in my decision was a week of work experience spent at Fluid with the Websites & Systems team. That experience opened my eyes to the dynamic, fast-paced world of digital project management. It showed me that learning on the job while working on meaningful projects could offer me more than sitting in a lecture hall ever could.
I explored various industries and businesses through work experience, but Fluid always stood out. Their innovative mindset and collaborative culture matched everything I was looking for in a workplace. They push boundaries, embrace creativity, and foster growth—qualities that instantly resonated with me. And let’s not forget their dog-friendly office, which was a surprise bonus for me!
Joining Fluid felt like stepping into a place where I could truly thrive. From day one, the team’s welcoming attitude and commitment to inclusivity have made all the difference. Their passion for supporting neurodiversity, in particular, has made me feel seen and valued.
Five months into my apprenticeship, my days are filled with learning, growth, and exciting challenges. Here’s a glimpse into my role:
Leading team calls
Every Thursday, I lead the Websites & Systems team call. It’s an opportunity to coordinate tasks and keep everyone aligned. Even though at first I felt out of my depth it’s something I’ve grown to really enjoy.
Managing small tasks
I’m responsible for breaking down tasks and ensuring they’re seamlessly added to the workflows of our developers’ and Michelle (our UX expert). It’s a great way to practice project management in a supportive environment.
Client interaction
I’m currently preparing to present tasks back to clients, an exciting step in building my communication and presentation skills.
Lunch & Learn
I’m organising a session on having dyslexia in the workplace. If someone had told me back in September—when I was first diagnosed—that I’d be sharing my experiences so openly, I wouldn’t have believed them.
These responsibilities are helping me develop essential skills while contributing meaningfully to the team.
Reflecting on my journey so far, it’s incredible to see how much I’ve grown. When I first joined Fluid, I was hesitant to speak up and unsure of my abilities. Even making a cup of tea in the kitchen felt intimidating! Now, I feel confident leading calls, managing tasks, and sharing ideas.
Fluid’s culture has played a big role in this transformation. The team encourages questions, celebrates successes, and creates a safe space for growth. Building relationships with my colleagues has been a highlight of my apprenticeship. Whether it’s attending Fluid Run Club, Fluid Fit, or hitting the gym before work, these activities have helped me bond with my fellow Fluiders. They’ve even started picking up my Gen Z lingo—“slay” and “no crumbs” have become a bit of a running joke!
And yes, I’ve also mastered the art of making a great cup of tea!
One moment that stands out is comparing two photos: one from my work experience week in 2023, where I presented the project I had been working on during the week, absolutely bricking it, and another of me in a relaxed, confident one-to-one meeting with my mentors Nicole and Georgia. The difference speaks volumes about how far I’ve come.
As I continue my three-year apprenticeship, I’m excited to take on more responsibilities, deepen my skills, and contribute further to Fluid’s projects. The journey so far has been incredibly rewarding, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.
To anyone wondering whether a degree apprenticeship might be right for them, I say go for it. The combination of real-world experience, supportive mentorship, and the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally is unmatched. At Fluid, I’ve truly found my flow—and I’m excited for what’s to come.
